DMZ

Got off the train at Dong Ha and bartered a moto ride to the DMZ Cafe which ran motorbike tours around the major sites, but with War Vets as your guide. My guide had worked with the Americans for 10 years and had been to most of the places we visited during the American war.

We visited, a B52 bomb crater, most of the ones in the area have been made safe and filled in but this one had been left for tourists. Checked out the Ho Chi Minh trail were it crosses the Ben Hai river. The old bridge is still there broken from American bombs. Visited a couple of old American fire bases, Charlie 1 and 2, hard to imagine what they look like as there is not much left to show what they once were. The Vinh Moc tunnels were the highlight, much bigger inside than the ones at Cu Chi. Stopped off at the 17th Parallel where highway 1 crosses the Ben Hai river.

On the way back stopped at the beach for a feed and a rest in hammocks stayed there for a few hours before riding back into Dong Ha.

Was a great day, had done quite a bit of reading on the American war so it was quite cool to see the war sights, had to imagine what alot of it looked like though with my guides help.
