Saw James and his Mum off then jumped on a train up to Bayeux the first town to be liberated in operation overlord during WW2.
Found a hostel and dumped my gear before having a look around the memorial museum to the battle of Normandy. Was very interesting and informative, checked out the Commonwealth Cemetery, not many kiwis here as it was mostly Americans, British, Canadians and French involved on the Allied side.
The next day took a D-Day tour out to Point Du Hoc which is a preserved point which has some fortifications which US army rangers took on the first day of the battle. Gives a good feel for what it was like back then. Visited Omaha beach which is in the movie Saving Private Ryan. Can see why it gave the Americans some trouble, as it was well defended both naturally and by the Germans. After that visited the American Cemetery before heading back into town. That arvo I cycled out to Arromanches and Gold beach were the British artificial harbour was set up for the unloading of troops and war goods.
