We are staying down by the river close to the central Ghat(Platform with steps into the river) in the narrow lanes that form the tourist/backpacker ghetto, its fairly hectic and there are alot of touts and noise about but somehow it seems peaceful compared to Thamel, the tourist Ghetto in Kathmandu which we have just come from.
On my first day here I got nailed by a big bull, managed to put my hand on his horn and kind of push off but he still gave me a tap in the ribs. There are loads of cows and other livestock wandering the streets, which means a lot of 'land mines' to avoid especially as I only have a pair of sandals.
James was fraud blocked by his bank, amusing especially as I have been 3 times before and he has always laughed at that, so the swing has swung around and bit him... has got it sorted now though, which is good as I was having to lend him money.
India is proving to be pretty cheap, only been here a few days though, but already it seems a lot cheaper than Nepal, especially food.
The Ghats are pretty interesting the religious ceremonies, burning of bodies, livestock, washing of clothes, bathing in the river, cricket games, kite flying tourists observing everything, people watching, boatmen and boats.
Have also been out to Sarnath 9km from Varanasi the site where Buddha gave his first sermon after gaining enlightenment, a couple of stupas and a good archaeology Museum to visit.
Took a boat out on the river, nice and peaceful and gives good views of Ghats and what is going on.
Kept running into Myanna a Canadian girl we trekked the Langtang trek in Nepal with, lots of chats and random cafe / restaurant hopping.
have booked our onwards train tickets to Satna where we will change to a bus to Khajuraho which is supposed to have some interesting temples.
