Al Alamein

Did a day trip out to here from Alex. Its the site of a famous world war two battle. Jumped on a bus, after trying to walk to the bus station, then a tram, then a service taxi, then jumped off the bus on the side of the highway and walked up to the Military mususem. Had a good look around there and then walked to the commonweath cemetary where around 1100 kiwis are buried. Which is set in Desrt like surrounings with sea views.

At the Second Battle of El Alamein (October 23 – November 4, 1942) Allied forces broke the Axis line and forced them in a retreat that pushed them all the way back to Tunisia. Winston Churchill said of this: "This is not the end, nor is it even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

Caught a sevice taxi back into town (120km)for 50 pence (uk).
