Istanbul and the 60 hr train ride

Back in the big smoke again seem to always end up here, perhaps should have chosen to pick up my visa further east, oh well. Got my visa code on Monday night went in Tuesday morning to the Embassy and applied for my visa, then picked it up on wed morning which meant I could buy my train ticket for the tRans Asian Express and jump on the train that night. Talk about cutting it fine, as the train from Istanbul to Tehran only runs once a week on a wed.

The train left from Hydrapasa which is on the Asian side of Istanbul but is easy to get to from the backpacker ghetto using cross Bosporus ferry. Got put in a 4 berth couchette with Steve a bloke from England headed for Tehran on a 2 week Holiday, im headed for Tabriz in western Iran but I have 5 weeks in Iran.

First night and day went by pretty quickly, read my book and chatted to Steve, got another old Iranian dude put in our cabin which cramped it up a bit, on the third day we had some Engine trouble and ended up borrowing a frieght engine and chucking its cars on behind us and so the delays mounted, we ended up arriving at Lake Van in the middle of the night and the ferry across was 5 hrs off which we changed to the Iranian train. Border crossing was ok and managed some sleep in between arrived in Tabriz at 5pm when I should have got there at 5am. Oh well 12 hr delay what you gonna do?
